GYBN's first meeting at the CBD COP 11

07.10.2012

Today the first official GYBN meeting is taking place at the CBD COP 11.
In the morning we are working on our intervention for the CBD COP 11 Opening Ceremony tomorrow.
At 1:00 p.m. we have a break outside at the Novotol lawn right next to the Convention Center. We are all sharing our food and Swetha's mom also made sandwiches for us.

We just have short time to enjoy the nice food in this little piece of nature. At 2:00 p.m. the GYBN meeting starts. First the Focal Points of the CBD Secretariat, Neil Pratter and Chantal Rabichaud, welcome us. In the last two years GYBN got a great support from the CBD Secretariat. Neil tells us, how important it is, that GYBN is participating at the CBD COP 11 to tell that we are here. Chantal mentions, that we have the possibility to arise partnerships now.

Later the whole GYBN group is joining the CBD Alliance meeting to present ourselves and ask for cooperation. The NGO representatives are pleased about our commitment. But after Svana brings out the dodo costume she made, everybody is delighted with us. They suggest to work together.

Günther Mitlacher from WWF Germany gives us a review about the implemetation of strategy for resource mobilisation. We discuss about, how much funding should be provided by 2020. Regarding the different countries, no government knows how much they spend on biodiversity conservation today. OECD countries are suppose to support developing countries by funding. The question arises, how these funds will be utilized. Günther can only tell us: "You will see!". The whole topic of funding is still unclear, because the positions of the countries are unknown. But Germany is in a safe position and Günther claims that German should push the other EU states like Spain and France more. He ends it's talk with the statement: "Money is not everthing, but it is crucial!"

Then we divide our group into two working groups. One group continues working on the intervention. The other group is writing an press article.
Once we are finished the indian youth delegates show us the nice vegetarian restaurant Minerva, where we are all having dinner together.

To get back to the hotel our indian friends help us to catch a riksha. At 11 p.m. we arrive at the Luxor Park. But it is still a lot to do, so it will get late tonight again.
Tomorrow a suspenseful day waits for us once again.

On the NAJU-Blog you find a german version!
