Coming from Nyansiongo, we are on our way to the Sandai Farm near Nyeri.
The next days we escape from the noisy city life and relax in the village of Nyansiongo.
I finished my work in Kazakhstan! So the next two weeks I can relax in Almaty (at least most of the time).
This morning professor Nurtazin, Jewgeni, Azim and me meet early in Almaty, because we want to go to the Sorbulaq Lake, which is a nice bird watching site.
Sylvia and Svea, two german girls from the hostel, and me make a trip to the Медеу (Medeu) mountains today.
Together Dima, Vero and I hike to the waterfall of Ала-Арча (Ala Artscha) just south of Bishkek today.
Dima and me visit the kyrgyz NABU in Bishkek today.
The hike to the Kel-Tor Lake at an altitude of about 2700 m is not far from Bishkek and really nice to escape from the city for one day.
During my field work time of three month in Kazakhstan, I spend one week in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. I have to refresh my visa, so I'm not here for fun (; But during the waiting time of one week, I use the time to explore Bishkek by walking, go shopping at the bazaars and relax in the big banya as well as go hiking in the mountains and meet lots of new people.
This morning I meet Nurgul, who is my personal guide for a sightseeing tour through Almaty this day. She shows me around in her city and betrays the nice sights of Almaty to me.
This monday I finish my second fieldwork round. That means now I can go back to the comfortable city life.
This day we spend in Aral Tobe to belated celebrate Viktor's birthday.
When I was in Kuygan the last time together with Clare, we wanted to make a trip to the Balkhash Lake. Unfortunately it didn't work out. But this time I have more luck.
In Aral Tobe Ayan, Viktor and me search the hydro station to get data for Niels about water flows in the delta.
For my data collection I need to go to every observation sides four times. That means we are driving in circles within the delta. Now my third bird observation round starts.
I'm back at the Kunawski Bridge, Clare is gone and it's the first, time that I'm alone only with kazakh people.
This friday we get up early, because Azim and me start our trip to Kyrgyzstan in the morning.
Our first fieldwork round is over. Now we are back in the big city of Almaty.
After four days of bird observations and soil sampling at the Kunawski Bridge with Clare and Ruslan, we visit Basa Delta together with Viktor for my secound round of bird observations and more soil sampling of Clare. Ruslan and me were in Basa Delta before and now we show Clare and Viktor around the tourist station. We meet lots of fisher tourists, get to know the workers in Basa Delta better and concentrate on our work. I'm still observing birds and Clare examines ground water and soil composition at the island. Besides we are enjoying our time ...
On our way from Kuygan to the Kunawski Bridge, in the middle of the hot, dry and very sunny steppe, we have a breakdown ...
Kuygan is a small village in the Balkhash region in Kazakhstan. The village is only 10 km away from the Balkhash lake. A river runs through and afterwards flows into the lake. This location causes a very good possibilty for fishing industry. So most people living in the village Kuygan work as fisherman. Just as Kasina, the lady that hosts us in her house. She is the manager of one of the little harbours in the village.
Also the kazakh working group, we are cooperating with, concerns oneself with fish research. Three of the five kazakh students, that are helping me, are examining fish properties in different areas of Kazakhstan for their thesis.
I use the location of Kuygan as another observation site for my bird studies. Here I do observations directly at the river, but also in the steppe around the village.
The next three month of my fieldwork in Kazakhstan are all about reed (Phragmites communis) and birds in the Ili Delta.
Basa Delta is a tourist station for fishing, that is located in the middle of the Ili Delta in Kazakhstan. To get there one's have to beat a long journey. With the car you can almost get from Karaoy to Basa Delta. But the tourist station is located on an island, so the last 10 km you have to conquer by boat.
For me Basa Delta is the perfect place to do bird observations for my masterthesis.
Today we try to go to Basa Delta, where I will do my first bird observations. But getting there is a big journey ...
Today I am going into my fieldwork area in Kazakhstan. The next three month I will work in the Balkash area. The Balkash Lake is located 400 km in the northwest of Almaty. It is about 600 km long and really shallow. The Ili river flows into the Balkash Lake. In the south east of the lake, at the mouth, there arises the big Ili Delta. And this is my fieldwork area!
